The French military has started returning its installations in Senegal, following President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's November 2024 request for withdrawal. The process began on March 7, 2025, with the transfer of Quartier Maréchal and Saint-Exupéry installations. A joint commission established in February 2025 oversees the withdrawal and future defense partnerships. The French presence in Senegal dates back to 1960; the new government aims to assert sovereignty and treat France as an equal partner. The withdrawal, including all installations by the end of 2025, involves laying off local staff by July 1, 2025, with efforts to facilitate job transitions.
